New Study on Inflammatory Health Intervention
Dr. La Follette is teaming up with Edifice Health, Inc to recruit 750 healthy adult females and males from the Bay Area. The goal is for these patients to enroll in a study that will evaluate the effectiveness of dietary supplement formulations in promoting a healthy lifestyle and improving general wellness by lowering Inflammatory Age® (iAge®). Dietary supplement formulations and iAge® are for research use only and are not intended to diagnose, treat, mitigate or cure any disease, condition, or disorder.
Systemic chronic inflammation is a normal biological function of an aging human body. Systemic chronic inflammation is not a reflection of infection, trauma, or injury, but instead a natural phenomenon of the aging process in a healthy population.
The science behind this study is Professor David Furman’s research from a 10-year, NIH-funded Stanford University study called the 1000 Immunomes Project. Professor Furman’s research established a metric to score systemic chronic inflammation called iAge®. iAge® will give you a metric for how much older/younger your systemic chronic inflammation levels appear with respect to your chronological age.
A mobile phlebotomist will come to your home to conduct 4 in-person visits for this 7-month long study. Each study visit will take about 1-1.5 hours per person depending on the procedures you are scheduled to have for that visit. You will have blood tests to measure your baseline iAge® and based on your individual results, you will be given a placebo or supplements that are i) Generally Recognized As Safe per FDA or ii) found in commonly eaten foods that are aimed to improve your iAge® score.
Participation will also involve asking about your medical history including medications you are taking, blood tests, measurement of your height, weight, waist, hip, blood pressure, heart rate, assessment of your ability to move quickly and easily, hearing test, bone density heel scan, taking a picture of the face and completion of study questionnaires. In addition, participants will wear a wearable fitness tracking device during the study to monitor sleep, stress, and physical activity.
Patients of Dr. La Follette will be invited to participate in this potentially revolutionary study.
Participation in this study is completely voluntary. Your insurance carrier will not be billed for any study-related tests and procedures and the costs of the interventions. Participation will not affect your treatment or care at Dr. La Follette’s clinic if you decide not to participate.

Materna Prep by Materna Medical Study
Materna Medical is conducting a study to see if they can help first-time moms achieve less pelvic muscle injuries and a shorter length of delivery during childbirth. The Materna Prep by Materna Medical is the latest device developed over the course of 10 years by Stanford BioHub, that offers a potential solution to this problem. The Materna Prep is designed to evenly and slowly expand the pelvic floor (both tissue and muscle) to accommodate for the baby’s head. The NIH offered a grant to further pursue research into this product.
In participating in this study using Prep in labor, we may be able to show pelvic floor preservation and protection while shorting the pushing stage of labor: a win-win!
The latest research into the Prep device is a randomized, control study for laboring patients. The IRB process is completed and is launching this month. The study participants, 40-50 total, will be offered a randomized choice of device or a sham as they approach the final weeks of their pregnancy. After explaining the risks (none as the device is small and safe) and benefits, patients will be able to enroll before labor. After delivery, we will measure the integrity of your pelvic floor including muscle attachments and pelvic structural support with our new GE sonogram to illustrate the findings.
NextGen Jane Prospective Study
Prenatal screenings are essential for assessing the health of both mother and baby during pregnancy. This study, conducted by another FemTech company called NextGen Jane, is designed to assess the possibility of conducting prenatal screening procedures non-invasively. During the study, a cotton tampon will be worn by participants for one hour. The theory surrounding this process is that trophoblastic cells can be shed both in the bloodstream and through the cervix in order to collect full fetal genetic information non-invasively. Participants will need to be pregnant women within 22 weeks of gestation.
