MonaLisa Touch
From Dr. La Follette – In Response to the FDA News Report About MonaLisa Touch
Dr. La Follette is a luminary trainer and has been working with the revolutionary MonaLisa Touch technology since 2014. MonaLisa Touch uses fractional C02 energy to elicit healing in the vagina to correct dryness and bladder instability associated with menopause or cancer. There is no rejuvenation involved, we are just eliciting a normal healing response from the dormant tissue. With the MonaLisa Touch device technology, we are harnessing a women’s body and tissue to heal itself. This device has not been associated with burns or other adverse effects.
“In the hands of a board-certified gynecologist, this technology has been a game changer for menopausal women and those who are on their own personal cancer journey. I urge any patient who is interested in this treatment, to seek a consultation with a licensed physician to explore if MonaLisa Touch is right for you.”
– Lizellen La Follette, MD
How does menopause affect the vagina?
During the early stages of menopause – the period called “perimenopause” – shifting levels of female sex hormones like estrogen cause the tissues in the vagina to become thinner, drier and less elastic. Vaginal secretions lessen, and even when a woman is sexually stimulated, the vagina may remain dry, which can make intercourse painful. The vagina also becomes less acidic, which increases the risk of infection and irritation. These problems may also occur in breast cancer survivors and in women who have had a hysterectomy. If these problems sound familiar, MonaLisa Touch may be right for you.*
What Is the MonaLisa Touch?
MonaLisa Touch is the name for a laser treatment that is used to restore vaginal health and to relieve conditions that occur during menopause like vaginal dryness, itching, and irritation.* Lasers, like MonaLisa Touch, are increasingly being used in medicine because of their ability to promote healing and tissue renewal.*

How do lasers work?
Lasers heat the area being treated and increase blood flow, which can stimulate the healing process.* Laser treatments also help increase collagen – the protein that provides structure to the skin and other body tissues.* MonaLisa Touch uses CO2 fractional laser technology – tiny beams of energy light that are less damaging than traditional lasers.
What happens during the procedure?
The MonaLisa Touch device is inserted into the vagina. When the device is turned on, laser pulses stimulate new collagen production, naturally increasing blood flow and increased lubrication to help improve the function of the vagina.* The procedure takes about five minutes in our Greenbrae office and is painless.
It is repeated at six-week intervals for a total of three treatments. It helps with vaginal Ph levels, bladder function, and pain associated with intercourse.* Most women report immediate results after only one treatment.* The reason why three treatments are recommended is to ensure the improvements in the vagina will last several months to a year.* Moving forward, it is then recommended to return for a single, yearly five-minute treatment.
Although women should abstain from sexual activity for two days after the procedure, they can otherwise resume their normal routines and activities.
